CHECK IN EXPERIENCE:
We arrived at about 10.30 am and were grateful to be able to be checked in early.
The Meriton Suites at Waterloo has two towers. The receptionist gave us long and complex instructions on how to get to our apartment in the neighbouring tower, which, in our jet lagged state, we promptly forgot. The instructions, as I recall, involved two different lifts, turns left and right and left and right and some walkways. I think!
We eventually did find our way to the adjoining tower, but then we could not find our actual apartment. After wandering around for some time, dragging our luggage behind us, we found a hotel worker, who told us that we had been given wrong instructions, and sent us back to the original tower where our apartment was situated. Not a good start for jet lagged guests!
As light sleepers we had requested an apartment in a quiet location and we were pleased to find that our apartment faced into the very quiet garden courtyard.
The apartments are named "suites." Ours was Suite 512 on the 5th floor. It was a modern and very spacious one bedroom apartment with a small balcony overlooking the courtyard garden. It had a full kitchen, including a coffee pod machine, laundry with washer and drier, king bed with a flat screen TV in the bedroom and large TV in the lounge. It also had a small study room, which would be excellent for business travellers. It had free WiFi and daily servicing.
We had a couple of maintenance issues, which were attended to promptly. However, we had to move apartments to sleep one evening due to the curtain rail in the bedroom falling off and we were relocated to apartment 702 for the night. This was a two level apartment, which was also modern and spacious.
Waterloo is an inner city suburb, 4 kilometres south of the CBD and neighbouring Moore Park , Surrey Hills and Darlinghurst. The apartments are on Danks Street with a large Coles and Aldi supermarket within 3 or 4 minutes walk. We bought an Opal transport card and used the on-line Trip Planner to use the bus service into and around the city. The bus stop was about 5 minutes walk away. We were not near a rail line.
FOOD and DRINK:
We didn’t find any interesting looking cafes close by, although we weren't looking very hard, as we were mostly cooking our own meals.
About 10 minutes walk away at East Village Shopping Mall we noticed a good selection of restaurants. Meriton Suites offered a meal delivery service.
PRICE / VALUE FOR MONEY:
NZ$162.00 per night. We considered it good value for a modern Sydney apartment reasonably close to the CBD.
Meriton Suites have many complexes in Sydney and have their own brand of toiletries and dish wash, soap powder etc.
A gym and swimming pool for guests were located in a separate building a block away. We didn't have time to check it out.
Business travelers with a car would find it very convenient, as the building has car parking facilities.
WOULD I RETURN AGAIN?:
I would certainly check out the other Meriton Suites in the Sydney area, but our preference would be a location by one of the train stations for an easier way of travelling around Sydney than having to use only buses.
